KFC debuts a customized Mtn Dew flavor, and it’s peachy | Advertising Age

Mtn Dew is teaming up with KFC to release Sweet Lightning, a peach-and-honey-flavored soda available only at the fried chicken chain’s U.S. locations.

The yellow-colored beverage, a permanent addition to KFC's menu from July 1, is being promoted by Sweet, a fictional smooth-talking pitchman in a yellow suit. As the story goes, he struck up a deal with KFC's Colonel Sanders to offer Sweet Lightning as the restaurant’s first exclusive beverage. (Like Colonel Sanders, Sweet has an affinity for eye-catching suits and ties.)

A 15-second teaser trailer created for the soft drink’s launch features Sweet and hints that “something sweet is coming.”

Nicole Portwood, Mtn Dew’s VP-marketing, said in a release that the brands "look forward to delighting our customers’ taste buds and pushing the envelope on creativity."

Mtn Dew Sweet Lightning isn’t Mtn Dew’s first foray into such deals. In 2004, the PepsiCo beverage brand partnered with Taco Bell—which is owned by Yum Brands, as is KFC—to release Baja Blast, a tropical lime-flavored soda developed to complement the Mexican-inspired fast food chain’s menu.
