Hi Thomas, Thanks for the response. I’m not putting DRM-protected files on the same plane as streaming. The point is labels can’t force products onto consumers. Early streaming services were too early and they weren’t good. They were built with the labels’ interests in mind, not the consumer. Labels wanted legal alternatives to piracy. And they were many years early. I’m not sure a great product would have mattered. People were into downloads—legal or illegal. Consumers can’t be rushed to give up ownership and buy into the access model. That took years. Not until there was widespread broadband access and smartphone ownership did streaming services have a chance.
